Welcome to English 1A – Composition and Reading
I am your instructor, April Flowers.
No—my name is not a joke. I just have parents with a sense of humor.
I even have a sister named May Flowers!
Here’s information you need to have before beginning this course:
English 1A-05W/07W, English Composition and Reading (5 units) Winter 2005

The Bedford Guide for College Writers with Reader (6th edition) by Kennedy
Quick Access (4th edition) by Troyka

an English-only dictionary
Class content:
*Some of this class will be boring; some quite exciting. But all of it will help you.
*This is a course in refining and expanding your academic writing, your understanding of academic rhetoric, and your ability
to think critically.
*The class will be divided into 11 modules and a midterm exam (Monday, February 28, 12-1pm, Foothill Campus, room 6308).
*Each module will consist of reading, writing, and skill assignments.
*Collaborative work is required.
Attendance:
Obviously attendance in an on-line course is a different kettle of fish or a horse of a different color (to use two of the
English language's more vivid idioms). However, it is still an issue. Students who do not contact me by e-mail before January
5 will be dropped from this course. Students who do not check in regularly by either turning in assigned material or
participating in the online forum will be notified of my intention of dropping them.
Face-to-Face Meetings:
All students will be required to come to Foothill College* on Monday, January 3, from 12noon-2pm, for an orientation and a
writing sample. You are also required to take the midterm on Monday, February 28, from 12noon - 1pm. (*Note: If this
is absolutely impossible, begin now to make arrangements for a proctured exam. This means you will have to find a
library, church, community center, etc., who will be willing to contact me for the exam and then administer it to you.)
Grading:
Your final grade in this class will depend on the following:
5% - Attendance (as defined above)
15% - Forum/lab assignments, journals
15% - Midterm (you MUST pass the midterm to pass this class
65% - Essays
